The Kids Shiai on June 24 will be cancelled (most of our staff will be at
the Jr. Olympics).
Thus, we will included a kids competition at the upcoming Shiai on May 27.
We will be running our “Newaza Only” format for both adults and kids.

ADULTS
8:00-9:00AM Weigh-ins and registration
9:30AM First match
(Round-robin / 3 minute matches)

KIDS
9:00-10AM Weigh-ins and registration
10:30AM First match
(Round-robin / 2 minute matches)

NEWAZA FORMAT
1. Bow in to start like regular matches.
2. Players drop to one knee, to initiate “Hajime”.
3. “Matte” called only for “out of bounds” or stalemate.
4. Restart in the middle, one knee down position.
5. No golden score. Decision with “Hantei” if tied.
WIN BY:
1. White belts (and all KIDS) can only win by pins.
2. Green and blue belts can win by pins or chokes.
3. Brown and black belts can win by pins, chokes, or armbars.
PENALTIES
1. Newaza penalties are the same as in regular tournaments.
2. Three “Shido” or “Hansokumake” rules still apply.

Portland Judo proudly presents THE SHIAI. A series of monthly USJF
sanctioned Judo tournaments in Portland, Oregon with you the competitor in
mind. Our goal is to run a tournament with an in-house vibe, coupled with
an open gym feel. Get tournament experience, make some new friends, and be
done in a couple of hours.

At Portland Judo, we love to keep things simple, but most of all, we love
to laugh and play… a lot. We realize not everyone is gunning for the next
Nationals and could use a non-intimidating environment to experience a live
match. New competitors who are still stumbling through the tournament rules
can use this as a study session. This tournament is also a great launching
pad for future referees and scorekeepers.

Do not miss this! The SHIAI – Play hard, learn something, go home
